Dear 1Ls-

Below is a letter from Warner, Norcross and Judd, a large firm in Michigan. If you are from the area, I suggest applying. They are specifically looking for 1L students of color. Please contact Nina Modi for more information if you are interested.

TO: Minority 1L Students Interested in Clerking At One Of "America's Greatest Places To Work With A Law Degree"

RE: "Fun, Pride and Profit"

Warner Norcross & Judd offers the rare combination of a sophisticated practice that still leaves time for a life outside of the office. As a result, we are one of two firms in Michigan, and one of only 115 firms in the nation to be named in America's Greatest Places To Work With A Law Degree.

Forty percent of the firm's partners are listed in The Best Lawyers in America. We are currentlyaccepting resumes from 1L students interested in 2007 summer clerkships in any of our four Michigan offices – Metro Detroit (Southfield), Grand Rapids, Muskegon or Holland.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Warner Norcross & Judd LLP strives to have a workforce that reflects the realities of today's diverse national and global community. We recognize that the differences in heritage, culture, and perspective that each individual brings to WNJ make us better able to serve the needs of our clients. We also understand that our respect for and understanding of those differences makes our firm a better and more collegial place to work. You can learn more about our firm's commitment to diversity by reading our 2006 Diversity Annual Report on our website at www.wnj.com. While on the site, you may also wish to learn more about our $5000 scholarship to minority law students and print an application.

The Warner Difference

Our summer associates and attorneys possess credentials that rival those of their counterparts at leading national law firms. They came to Warner Norcross for the quality of our practice, the depth and breadth of our national client base, for firm policies that foster collegiality and balance, and for the exceptional quality of life in Michigan. That combination is difficult, if not impossible, to find in a large law firm in a large city.

Warner Norcross differs from most large law firms in several significant ways. Associates and summer associates choose their own areas of practice and are not slotted into groups. Our lockstep compensation system eliminates internal competition for hours and clients, making the work environment a very collegial one. With our extensive Career Development Program, a full time Director of Professional Development, and our policies that address life/balance issues, WNJ is committed to helping its associates develop into leading members of the profession and partners in the firm.

Our summer class of 2006 was composed of 22 summer associates from ten different law schools, including five minority students and 12 women. As a summer associate at Warner Norcross, you won't be bored and you won't be stuck in the library. Our program allows you to explore all areas of our practice and does not limit you to one or two practice groups during the summer or when you receive a permanent offer. Work assignments are channeled through a central system to ensure that you'll get work from a variety of practice areas, especially the areas in which you have an interest. It also ensures that you will receive feedback on all your work.

We Would Like to Hear from You

Although we are not able to visit your campus this fall, we hope you will send us your resume. To apply for a clerkship, please send a cover letter, your resume and a copy of your law school transcript to me at the following address or by email. I look forward to hearing from you!

AALDEF Spring & Summer 2007 Internships

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is the first organization on the East Coast to protect and promote the legal rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legal advocacy and community education. Current program priorities include economic justice for workers, immigrants' rights, voting rights and civic participation, language rights, affirmative action, the elimination of anti-Asian violence and police brutality, youth rights and educational equity, and the assistance of low-income Chinatown residents and workers affected by 9-11. For more information about AALDEF, visit our website at www.aaldef.org.
Included in this email are details regarding the following internships:
Spring 2007 Undergraduate Internships
Winter 06/Spring 07 Voting Rights Internships
Spring 2007 Legal Internships
Summer 2007 Undergraduate Internships
Summer 2007 Legal Internships
Summer 2007 Pfizer Inc./AALDEF Corporate Legal Internship
**************************************************************************************************************************************
WINTER 2006 & SPRING 2007 INTERNSHIPS
DEFENDING ASIAN AMERICAN VOTING RIGHTS
for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students
In prior elections, Asian Americans faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote; for example, ballots have been mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans and vice versa, lack of interpreters, denial of language assistance, rude and hostile poll workers. Then, when the news media reported on election returns and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were overlooked. AALDEF's Voting Rights Program aims to enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard against anti-Asian voter discrimination.
Voting Rights Interns work on the following:
*Reviewing election monitoring reports to advocate for election reforms and compliance with the Voting Rights Act and federal Constitution. The Voting Rights Act mandates Chinese and Korean language voting assistance and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination. This includes legal research and writing, fact pattern development, and working with clients and witnesses for possible litigation.
*Documenting the use of bilingual ballots and reporting on Asian American voting patterns from AALDEF's multilingual multi-state voter survey.
*Assess local elections compliance with settlements reached in voting rights lawsuits in Massachusetts and other states.
*Registering new voters after citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.
*Conducting research and advocacy on local, state and federal election reform proposals.
Description of Fall Internships:
Supervision: Interns are supervised by attorneys through regular meetings and trainings.
Compensation: These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit can be arranged.
Hours: Interns work anywhere between 12 to 25 hours per week in the office.
Duration: Winter internships are during intersession and Spring internships usually follows the spring semester, commencing with the start of classes (end of January) to the first or second week of May.

WORKING WITH A JUDGE:

Hello APALSA,
I'm writing to encourage any 1Ls or 2Ls thinking about working for a judge this summer to apply to Judge Lindsay at the federal District Court in Boston. I'm clerking for him this year, and he is truly an amazing human being. He's very engaged with his clerks and interns on a personal level, having lunch with us every day and sharing his stories about coming of age as a black man in the south during the civil rights era and his thoughts on pretty much anything. On a professional level, an internship with him would be very rewarding. He regularly relies on clerks and interns in making decisions; we attend court proceedings as often as we wish, and he often breaks in the middle of sentencing or a trial to solicit our opinions. Interns do substantive work, including plea memos and bench memos to assist the judge in preparing for hearings.
I believe the judge has begun to receive resumes and cover letters for the summer, but I don't think his hiring really gets underway before January. If anyone is interested in learning more about working for Judge Lindsay, please feel free to contact me. Also, please forward to LALSA, SALSA, APALSA, Lambda, ACS, and/or other listservs that may reach other interested folks.
Thanks,
Amy Reichbach, BCLS '05

JOB FAIR

FOR

FIRST-YEAR LAW STUDENTS

THE DELAWARE STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S
COMMITTEE FOR DIVERSITY IN THE LEGAL COMMUNITY
INVITES YOU TO ATTEND THE

ELEVENTH ANNUAL DELAWARE MINORITY JOB FAIR
FOR FIRST-YEAR LAW STUDENTS
AT WIDENER UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW

SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 2007
WILMINGTON, DELAWARE

Please visit your Career Placement Office on December 1, 2006 to learn more about the Delaware Minority Job Fair. The deadline for submitting your application is Monday, December 11, 2006.

Dear Student:

As part of an effort to recruit talented students and increase diversity in the Delaware Bar, a number of law firms, corporations, and governmental legal employers will participate in the Eleventh Annual Delaware Minority Job Fair for First-Year Law Students, which will be held on the Wilmington campus of Widener University School of Law on Saturday, January 20, 2007. The Job Fair, which is by invitation only, is limited to students who are in their first year of law school during the 2006-2007 school year.

We urge you to apply for an invitation to the Job Fair. The Delaware Minority Job Fair differs from many other job fairs in that students must be invited to attend rather than simply registering and showing up. In return, the students invited receive considerably more individual attention than is possible in a very large job fair. When you submit an application for an invitation you are, in effect, submitting an application to all of the Delaware legal employers who participate in the program. You will be eligible for an invitation if two or more of those employers wish to meet you. We plan to send out invitations enclosing a proposed interview schedule in early January 2007. Your response, accepting or declining the invitation, will be due by Monday, January 8, 2007.

There are no application or registration fees. If you are invited, you will need to arrange for your own transportation to Wilmington. We hope to be able to reimburse you for all or at least a portion of your transportation expenses. We historically have been able to reimburse 100% of such expenses. We will provide a breakfast to all invited students. A number of experienced attorneys and leaders of our Bench and Bar will join us for breakfast to answer any questions you might have about life and the practice of law in Delaware.

The Job Fair is a unique opportunity for law students not only to interview with a number of well-respected Delaware employers, but also to learn about the practice of law in the State from leaders of its legal community.

To become eligible for an invitation you must complete the attached application form and return it via mail, fax or e-mail, along with your resume and college and law school transcripts (if available) no later than Monday, December 11, 2006 to:

Joni L. Peet,
Job Fair Administrator
Richards, Layton & Finger, P.A.
One Rodney Square
920 N. King Street
Wilmington, DE 19801

Fax (302) 498-7778
peet@rlf.com

We are looking forward to receiving your application.

Sincerely,
William J. Wade
Committee Chair

Friday 11/17 marks the date of the first annual Inter-APALSA Semi-Formal Boat Cruise. We'll be sharing a cruise ship with Harvard, BC, BU, New England School of Law, and Northeastern.

Thanks to Harvard's persuasive capacity and the generosity of the firm Kramer Levin, the cruise has been very well-subsidized, and the cost is $15 per APALSA member. See Janet Ly's flyer for the specifics.

You can access the flyer at the following address:

You can pay me (Brian) or Janet Ly, and feel free to e-mail either of us with any questions you may have. We'll set up a few times to meet at the snack bar for sign-ups, and you can definitely bring $15 to the Brown Bag Lunch that's coming up on the 14th.

You are cordially invited to celebrate Diwali!!!

Diwali or Deepavali, the most significant Hindu festival in India, is an occasion for the invocation of the Gods of prosperity and plenty. Diwali means "rows of lighted lamps" and the celebration is often referred to as the Festival of Lights. It symbolizes the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness. It celebrates the victory of good over evil - and the glory of light. Lights and diyas are lit to signifying the driving away of darkness and ignorance, as well as the awakening of the light within ourselves. Diwali is a time for family gatherings, food, celebration and puja . The celebration means as much to Hindus as Christmas does to Christians. In some regions, Diwali also signifies the arrival of the New Year.

On November 7, 2006, Massachusetts gubernatorial election will be held. Many of us will begin and establish our legal careers in Boston and will be directly affected by the actions taken by the
governor who wins this election. Furthermore, too many of us do not vote because there are no accessible means to actually register ourselves to vote. LALSA will be holding a voter registration drive October 11-13 in the Cafeteria. We will sit in the Caf with registration forms and encourage students passing by to register. They fill out the form and we will then send those forms to their respective city/town halls to complete the official registration process.

Help Defend Asian American Voting Rights in Boston!!!!

Help Defend Asian American Voting Rights in Boston!!!!
When: Monday and Tuesday Evening, September 18-19, 2006
Where: Placements in and around Boston (Chinatown, Lowell, Dorchester)
Time: Training on Monday Evening, Polling on Tuesday Evening
Who: Only 1 or 2 volunteers are needed for the MA Primary Election on September 19

FYI: There will be a larger full-scale poll monitoring activity in November (like last year) where more people can get involved. For Sept, we only need 1 or 2 other people.

Some questions that may be going through your mind...

What is this?
This is another great volunteering opportunity where you can be directly involved with the community and actively involved in protecting the voting rights of Asian Americans. Since 1992, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has conducted non-partisan multilingual surveys of Asian American voters to document voting patterns and to assess compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act, which bars anti-Asian voter discrimination.

What would I be doing?
Volunteers conduct exit surveys at various polling sites, which may later become the basis for voting rights litigation. There are different shifts located in and around Boston (Chinatown, Lowell, Dorchester, and Mission Hill).

Who else will be participating?
I, for one, will be at one of the sites which has yet to be determined. There will also be students volunteering from other Boston law schools and colleges. Last year, students from Suffolk, NU, Tufts, and BU (just to name a few) participated. This is a great way to meet people from other schools as well! Last year, BCLS fielded teams at multiple polling sites.

This sounds awesome!! How do I sign up?
All you have to do is fill out the volunteer form and attend a BRIEF (45 mins) training session.

About AALDEF.
Founded in 1974, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is the first legal rights organization on the East Coast serving Asian Americans. We were founded by a group of lawyers, law students and community activists who believed that the law should be used as a tool to achieve social and economic justice for Asian Americans and all Americans.

We believe that the laws in this country should be applied equally, regardless of race or ethnicity. We also believe that every American has a right and an obligation to be involved in the communities where she or he lives and works. Our aim is to build an informed and active Asian America that is involved in the civic life of this country.

Public Interest Retreat

Boston College Law School
2nd Annual
Public Interest Retreat
September 15-17, 2006
Last spring, BC Law School held its first annual Public Interest Retreat, bringing together an amazing bunch of students committed to developing careers in public interest law for a weekend of reflection, camaraderie, mutual support, and professional sustenance. This year, we’re holding the event in the fall in order to start the year off right. While others suit up for law firm interviews, we’ll take some time to build our own path toward work in the common good.
We hope you’ll join us! This year’s Public Interest Retreat will be held the weekend of September 15-17 (Friday evening to Sunday morning) at BC’s new retreat center in Dover, Massachusetts, a short 20 minute drive from the law school. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with other public interest-minded students and faculty, meet alumni, hear inspiring speakers, and think about the many ways in which the law can be used as a tool for social change. In addition to speakers and discussion sessions, the schedule will also provide ample time for participants to interact informally and reflect on their experiences and career goals.
BC’s Public Interest Retreat is student-initiated and student-led. We are fortunate to receive generous support from the Law School Fund. Thanks to that support, the entire weekend will be free for participants. We have room for up to 30 students to attend.
To attend the Public Interest Retreat, please send a brief statement (1-2 paragraphs) to Gavi Wolfe at wolfegb@bc.edu about why you want to participate in the retreat, and how and why you see yourself using your legal education to serve the public interest. Applications must be received by Monday, September 4. Retreat participants will be selected by lottery.

Dear Mr. Averion:

As the Hiring Committee Chairman of Goodwin Procter LLP, I am reaching out to you in your role as a leader of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association to inform you of the 2006 Goodwin Diversity Fellowships. Intended to promote diversity in the legal profession and at our firm, these Fellowships provide up to three annual awards of $15,000 each to minority second-year law students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, outstanding leadership, a commitment to community service, interest in the private practice of law, and other special achievements and honors.

We launched the Goodwin Diversity Fellowships in the Fall of 2005, and awarded $15,000 each to three Fellows: Nilda Isidro of NYU School of Law, Charles Borrero of Georgetown University Law Center, and Marie Scott of Harvard Law School.

As you may know, Goodwin Procter LLP is one of the nation’s leading law firms, and is headquartered in Boston, with offices in New York, Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles. The firm’s core areas of practice are corporate, litigation and real estate, with specialized areas of focus that include financial services, private equity, technology companies, REITs and real estate capital markets, intellectual property and products liability.

We would greatly appreciate your help in forwarding this e-mail as appropriate to your fellow students who are entering their second year of law school this Fall. Goodwin Diversity Fellows will be chosen from among those students who express interest in joining our Summer Program, submit a Fellowship application, and complete the Fellowship interview process.

To be eligible, you and/or your classmates will need to complete an application and, if possible, sign up to interview with us on-campus when we are at Boston College on Thursday, August 31, 2006 as part of our 2L summer associate interview process. Boston College Students Show Solidarity with Immigrants
By: The Boston College May Day Coalition

Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts — Students, Faculty and Student
Organizations have formed the Boston College May Day Coalition (BCMDC)
in support of the nationwide movement for immigrant rights.

The BCMDC seeks support from all individuals: students, faculty, and
staff alike. Expressly, we encourage everyone in the Boston College
community to:
a. Boycott class or work on May 1
b. Refrain from making any purchases throughout the day
c. Express solidarity with the movement by wearing white shirts or white ribbons
d. Endorse our campaign, whether as an individual or as an
organization by spreading the word to all your friends, classmates,
professors, and organizations
e. Join us on O'Neill plaza at 11:30 a.m., and continue to Harvard for
an organized rally at 1:30 p.m., followed by a march to the State
House for a statewide rally.

BCMDC's platform is rooted in a desire to work for social justice and
equality. Those in the Boston College community committed to the same
ideals need a coalition to express their solidarity with society's
marginalized communities. Our aim is to raise awareness among students
and faculty of the immigrant rights movement. Only then will our
elected officials address the unfair treatment of immigrants.

Our concrete goals are to:

1) Create a dialogue to raise campus awareness of the country's unjust
immigration policy; and
2) Express solidarity with immigrants who suffer oppression under U.S.
immigration policy.

In anticipation of the general boycott scheduled for May 1, and in an
effort to expand dialogue and understanding about this critical issue,
student leaders have scheduled the following events and activities:

1. An immigration roundtable discussion with experts and civic leaders
on April 26, 2006, at Boston College Law School.
2. A white ribbon campaign on May 1, 2006, to express support for and
solidarity with all immigrants.
3. In interfaith religious service on May 1, 2006, at Boston College Law School.
4. A letter-writing campaign to urge Congress to pass sensible
legislation that does not criminalize undocumented workers and honors
the contributions that all immigrants make to the United States.
5. An undergraduate vigil scheduled for May 1st at noon on O'Neill
plaza, followed by participation in the Harvard University rally and a
march to the State House to attend the MIRA Coalition press conference
and statewide rally.

The Boston College May Day Coalition is also part of the larger Boston
Student May Day Coalition, which will convene and march, for the first
time as a unified organization, at the Harvard University walkout on
May 1.

Asian American Law Journal: Call for Submissions

Dear APALSA:

The Asian Law Journal of the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) has recently changed its name to the Asian American Law Journal, reaffirming our commitment to addressing issues of concern for Asians in the United States. We would like to invite your members to submit an article for our fourteenth regular volume or our special upcoming volume dedicated to affirmative action and overturning Proposition 209. (Please feel free to circulate this email widely.)

As one of only two Asian Pacific American law journals in the nation, we are committed to providing a forum for scholars, practitioners, and students to address legal and policy issues relevant to the APA community. As we prepare to publish our next volumes, we are dedicated to continuing our pursuit of excellent, applicable scholarship to foster awareness and increase dialogue both within and beyond the legal community. We would request that you send articles on international issues only insofar as such issues affect APA communities in the United States. Past volumes of AALJ have addressed such issues as hate crimes, accent discrimination, immigration policy, civil liberties, and political engagement. While articles on all APA issues are welcome, we also hope to expand our coverage of less-represented Asian Pacific American groups.

Please submit any previously unpublished article, note or comment regarding legal, political, or social issues that you believe have impacted the Asian Pacific American community.

If you are interested in contributing to the fourteenth volume of AALJ or the special affirmative action issue, please send us your submission early. Articles will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis until Friday, September 1, 2006. Those accepted by the AALJ editorial board will undergo two rounds of editing. The editing process may continue through Spring 2007. Final publication is scheduled for May of 2007.

Articles submitted should meet the following requirements:

* The article must be sent in Microsoft Word format, as an e-mail attachment, to the following address: aalj.submissions@gmail.com.

* The article must be double-spaced and single-sided.

* The article must be in 12 point font and at least thirty (30) pages in length, with one inch margins. (Note: shorter pieces will be considered for the Notes and Comments section of the journal.)

* Footnotes must be within the text (i.e. incorporated at the end of each page). Footnote citations should be according to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th ed.).

* Statements made in the text must be supported by outside authority.

* The first draft of the article must be submitted by Friday, September 1, 2006. (This deadline may be altered to fit your schedule.)

* The second draft of the article must be submitted within two weeks after receiving AALJ's suggested revisions of the first draft.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the submission process, please do not hesitate to contact us via email. We look forward to receiving your submissions. Thank you for your time and attention.

Best regards,
Kati Hong and Jenny Lam
