3. APALSA Outlining Workshop
APALSA will be holding an outlining session on October 14, Tuesday at 3:30pm in EW 115B. The purpose of this session is to give 1Ls an idea of how to create their outlines for finals. Several 2Ls and 3Ls will be explaining their own outlining processes to give 1Ls different perspectives. We will then get into smaller groups and have a quick Q and A session! If you have any questions feel free to e-mail Asuka at kondoa[at]bc.edu or Christine at christine.bang.1[at]bc.edu.

Calling all 2Ls and 3Ls! We need your outlines! In preparation for the APALSA outlining workshop on October 14, we are collecting outlines from all upperclassmen to go in our LexisNexis outline bank. 2Ls--help out the 1L class, and send us your outlines from last year. 3Ls--if you have any additional outlines to add to the bank send us those too. Email all outlines in a .doc attachment to Aimee at hartonoa[at]bc.edu by Friday, October 10. DEADLINE TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN RUNNING FOR 1L REP: 5:00PM; MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
Elections for 1L Section Representatives. Each section elects 1 representative to serve for the academic year. 1L rep. is a great way to get close to the inner workings of APALSA. We're planning some really fun and new ideas for this year!
Duties: Section representatives attend APALSA e-board meetings, announce APALSA events to their section as well as encourage 1L attendance at APALSA events. Section representatives administer three events during the year with the help of the 1L liaison: Halloween candy bags, Lunar New Year celebration and the Year-end Banquet. Section representatives are the voice of the 1L class for APALSA, helping APALSA to recognize and address the needs of the class. Section representatives work closely with the 1L liaison and Vice President Internal. Total time commitment varies on the time of year -- but e-board meetings will be once every two weeks, and section reps should be present for APALSA events (occurring about 2 times a month).

6. Asian American Law Journal Akiyu Hatano Student Writing Award
The Asian American Law Journal (AALJ) at UC Berkeley School of Law sponsors the Akiyu Hatano Student Writing Award, an annual competition designed to encourage scholarship that addresses legal issues affecting Asian Pacific Americans. The author of the winning submission will receive $500 and will have his or her paper published in the 2009 issue of AALJ. Other submissions will also be considered for publication.
Submissions must be original, unpublished works exploring legal issues that impact the Asian Pacific American community. We welcome focused analyses of individual Asian Pacific American ethnic groups, as well as discussions of domestic or international issues affecting Asian Pacific Americans in general. Past papers have addressed Asian Pacific American political empowerment, the use of "cultural defenses" in criminal law, racial profiling, and Asian Pacific Americans and affirmative action. Submissions focusing on any legal issue affecting Asian Americans will be considered.
Submissions must meet the following criteria:
- Document must be sent as a Microsoft Word attachment to aalj.writingcompetition[at]gmail.com;
- Document must be at least twenty (20) typed pages, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font, with one inch margins;
- Include a cover letter with the author's name, current address, current telephone number, and current e-mail address; and
- Include citations at the bottom of each page that conform to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (18th Edition).
Entries will be judged on thoroughness of research, quality of legal analysis, clarity of expression, and timeliness of thesis. The decision of the judges will be final and AALJ reserves the right not to choose a winner in the event that no entries meet our publishing criteria. All submissions will be considered for publication and AALJ reserves the exclusive publication rights to all submissions.

Tuesday, 9/9 will address "the past" and Wednesday, 9/10 will address "the present." Both are at 12:45pm and in Stuart 403. This is a casual conversation - so please attend, even if you're just wondering what we're up to!
