***GOODWIN DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIPS***
To promote diversity in the legal profession, and to help leading minority law students defray the high costs of their legal education, Goodwin Procter has created the Goodwin Diversity Fellowships. Through these Fellowships, we annually award stipends of $15,000 each to up to three minority law students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance, outstanding leadership, a commitment to community service, interest in the private practice of law, and other special achievements and honors. Finalists who do not receive a Fellowship may receive an offer to join our summer associate program following their second year of law school.
We accept applications for Goodwin Diversity Fellowships from any full-time, currently enrolled student of color who is pursuing a J.D. degree at an accredited law school and has no more than two full years of law school remaining. Students should apply for a Fellowship during the summer before their second year of law school, in connection with signing up to interview with us for a summer associate position the following year. Candidates applying to be Goodwin Diversity Fellows must express interest in joining our Summer Program.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legal advocacy, and community education. Legal internships are available in the following program areas:
- Anti-Trafficking Project, legal research on the Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (TVPA), as well as outreach, community education, and advocacy on the rights of women and youth trafficking survivors.
- Community Health Care Initiative, legal research, as well as community education and outreach in the areas of immigration, government benefits, language rights, and health care access;
- Economic Justice for Workers, litigation on behalf of garment, restaurant, and other low wage workers;
- Educational Equity and Youth Rights, legal services, policy work, community education, research and litigation concerning educational equity, juvenile justice, affirmative action and post 9-11 hate violence and racial targeting;
- Immigrant Access to Justice, litigation, legal services, and organizing/outreach focusing on communities impacted by 9-11;
- litigation, legal services, and advocacy regarding local and state enforcement of immigration laws;
- legal and policy advocacy and support for community mobilizing and education regarding comprehensive immigration reform;
- South Asian Workers Project, direct legal services on employment-related claims to South Asian immigrant workers, as well as community education and advocacy; and
- Voting Rights, legal research and fact development under the Voting Rights Act and Equal Protection challenging anti-Asian voter discrimination, advocacy on bilingual ballots, and state and local election reform; produce reports and organize public forums.
Description of Internships
Interns are supervised by attorneys in specific program areas. Legal interns will work on litigation, particularly legal research and writing, legal and policy advocacy, client intakes, and some community outreach and education. Each program area differs in emphasis.
These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit can be arranged. Interns work anywhere between 8 to 25 hours per week. The internship usually commences with the start of classes and ends in early December.

FALL INTERNSHIPS 2007 DEFENDING ASIAN AMERICAN VOTING RIGHTS
for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, and community education. Fall internships are available for college, graduate, and law students in AALDEF’s Voting Rights Program.
In prior elections, Asian Americans faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote; for example, ballots have been mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans and vice versa, lack of interpreters, denial of language assistance, rude and hostile poll workers.
AALDEF’s Voting Rights Program aims to enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard against anti-Asian voter discrimination.
Voting Rights Interns work on the following:
- Election monitoring to ensure Asian Americans are treated fairly at the polls and to document violations of the Voting Right Act and federal Constitution. The Voting Rights Act mandates the availability of Chinese and Korean language assistance and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination.
- Work with pro bono lawyers at corporate law firms and volunteer law students to inspect poll sites for compliance with the Voting Rights Act and Help American Vote Act.
- Conduct research and advocacy on local, state and federal election reform proposals. Research the need for and use of bilingual ballots, investigate complaints of voting patterns.
- Register new voters after citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.
Description of Fall Internships:

Compensation: These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit, college work-study, or a clinical placement can be arranged.
Hours: Interns work anywhere between 12 to 25 hours per week in the office.

FEDERAL WORK STUDY POSITION

you're receiving this email because we thought you might be interested in helping the victims of last week's immigration raid in new bedford. as you likely know, last tuesday immigration officials surrounded and entered a factory in new bedford in southern mass. and detained over 350 immigrants working there. many of the immigrants were sole or primary caregivers and their confinement resulted in at least 60 children being left alone or without adequate care. federal officials have moved about 200 of the detainees to the immigration detention centers in texas, including the one near harlingen, texas, where some of you went as part of the immigration service trip.
several community organizations, including legal services organizations, are trying to locate people and determine legal strategies. there are a few organizations in new bedford and boston in need of help from law students. bilingual (spanish-english) law students are especially needed given that most of the immigrants detained are from el salvador or guatemala. knowledge of immigration law is not necessary.
in new bedford, catholic social services and another organization could use up to 4 volunteers per day. in boston, the mira (mass. immigrant and refugee advocacy) coalition can use up to 3 per day. it would be great to have people volunteer for an entire day, but if that's not possible for you a shorter commitment is welcomed. volunteer needs for this weekend are still being worked out as the emphasis on saturday is to have a large turnout at the demonstration on saturday afternoon in new bedford. also, it would be great to carpool to new bedford so we are looking for people who have a car and are willing to drive others.

My name is Michael Peil, and I am the Assistant Dean for International Programs at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri.
I am writing to invite you - and any students at your school interested in international law - to apply for the 2007 Summer Institute for Global Studies in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Washington University, Case Western Reserve University, and Utrecht University co-sponsor this six-week course, which offers six intensive courses in current topics in international law.
The dates of the course are June 10 through July 21. All courses will be taught in English, by leading U.S. and European scholars, practitioners, and judges. We are especially excited this year to welcome as a Distinguished Visiting Jurist Judge Richard Goldstone, who will teach a three-week course titled "The Future of International Humanitarian Law." Judge Goldstone served as a Justice of the South African Constitutional Court from 1994 to 2003, and has also served as Chief Prosecutor for the UN ad hoc Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda.
The deadline for application is March 30, and seats in the program are filling up quickly.

Professor Mark Brodin will introduce the topics and speakers. Students will then present their papers, and Prof. Brodin will moderate a discussion following the presentations.

Judicial Clerkship Program
Hello 2L's,
In the upcoming months, we will be hosting a series of programs on Judicial Clerkships to aid in the clerkship application process. The first of this series of programs will be on Tuesday evening, March 13th at 5 p.m. At the meeting you will be able to sign up for our clerkship listserve in order to receive upcoming information on clerkships.
If you cannot attend the program, you may e-mail us the week of the program to be added to the listserve.
In addition, for those of you interested in pursuing a clerkship, (following the program), you will be required to sign up for an individual mandatory clerkship meeting. More details will be provided at the meeting.
Most federal courts will begin the process in early September, while the different state courts may begin hiring as early as this Spring.
As each state follows their own calendar for the hiring information, it is important to check the state-specific deadlines. We are updating our clerkship information, but for general guidance (and last year's deadlines--updated June 2006), please visit the Career Services Website: Clerkship Section; Current Opportunities subsection http://www.bc.edu/schools/law/services/career/clerkships/openings.html . Calling all Massachusetts Law Students Interested in Issues Facing Transgender Folks
Are you a law student? Are you interested in improving the legal landscape for transgender folks in Massachusetts? Does gender identity or expression discrimination affect you or someone you care about? Are you interested in LGBT or social justice legal work? Are you an activist?
MLGBA and MTPC need your energy and ideas to help improve the legal climate for transgender people in the state of Massachusetts. This is a great chance to support transgender rights, to connect with and work alongside the lawyers of MLGBA, to sharpen your policy advocacy skills, and to get to know legislators, lobbyists, and lawyers in Massachusetts. It is also a great way to mobilize the networks at your law school to create change.
Please join us on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at 6:00 p.m. for a meeting to discuss ways that law students can support the recently introduced bill that calls for statewide non-discrimination and hate crimes protections, and other initiatives that law students can undertake. The Boston Lawyers Group (BLG) is pleased to announce the 2007 Mentor Program for students of color in Boston-area law Schools. The program is designed to provide first year law students of color an opportunity to develop a one-on-one relationship with an attorney from one of its participating members. Eligibility is limited to a total of 100 first year law students of color from the eight participating Boston-area law schools.
Detailed information regarding program requirements and the Mentor Program application is attached. Applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis. It is crucial for you to complete the application and forward it to The Boston Lawyers Group well before the deadline of Tuesday, March 6, 2007. Foley Hoag Resume Workshop
On Monday, March 12, Foley Hoag will host an event for local 1L students of color. While the event will focus on assisting students in polishing their resumes and on providing interview tips, it will also provide a terrific opportunity for them to network with members of the firm's Hiring Committee in advance of next fall's hiring process. Students can also look forward to chatting over hors d'oeuvres with other Foley Hoag lawyers from a wide variety of practice groups, who will be well situated to answer practice specific and other questions. Congressman Meehan at BC LAW, Feb 26 5:00 pm
Hello,
I am writing to you in your capacities as leaders of the law school's student organizations.
As you may know, Congressman Marty Meehan will be speaking at the law school on Monday, February 26, at 5:00 p.m. in EW120. He will have returned on Friday, February 23, from a week in Iraq, a trip that is part of his investigative role as chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. This will be his only speaking engagement upon his return prior to returning to Congress to begin organizing subcommittee hearings. He will also reintroduce a bill he authored, known at the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would repeal "Don't Ask,Don't Tell." He believes that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which excludes openly gay servicemembers from the military, is costly to our national interest in several ways. (See press release below.)
We have sent the press release below to local and national media. I would very much appreciate your forwarding this to your organization's membership to let them know about this exciting law school event. This is a rare opportunity to speak directly with a member of Congress who can report current conditions on the ground in Iraq.

Judicial Clerkship Program
Hello 2L's,
In the upcoming months, we will be hosting a series of programs on Judicial Clerkships to aid in the clerkship application process. The first of this series of programs will be on Tuesday evening, March 13th at 5 p.m. At the meeting you will be able to sign up for our clerkship listserve in order to receive upcoming information on clerkships.
If you cannot attend the program, you may e-mail us the week of the program to be added to the listserve.
In addition, for those of you interested in pursuing a clerkship, (following the program), you will be required to sign up for an individual mandatory clerkship meeting. More details will be provided at the meeting.
Most federal courts will begin the process in early September, while the different state courts may begin hiring as early as this Spring.
As each state follows their own calendar for the hiring information, it is important to check the state-specific deadlines. We are updating our clerkship information, but for general guidance (and last year's deadlines--updated June 2006), please visit the Career Services Website: Clerkship Section; Current Opportunities subsection http://www.bc.edu/schools/law/services/career/clerkships/openings.html . The user id for the Vermont Guide to state clerkships has changed--it is guide2007 and the password is juneau.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY
Hey Guys,
I know it took a long time but I have a community service project that is on going. The SteppingStone Foundation is la comprehensive program that combines preparing selected Boston children for the independent school exam (ISEE) through a 14 month program through two summers and 1 school year and continues to offer tutoring for students in Independent or Exam Schools. I was a Stepping Stone Scholar and the program is dear to my heart. There are two ways that we can volunteer our time.
1. SMASH Program--flexible tutoring program which would require us to show up 1 Saturday a month for the semester and tutor scholars in whichever subjects they need help in. Program runs from 10-12 on Saturdays
2. Academic Mentors--less flexible program which would pair each of us with an individual student and require us to commit to comming 2 Satudays a month. Program runs from 9:30-12:30 on Saturdays (last 1/2 hour is used for social activities such as gym use like basketball games, etc).
We also have the option of utilizing the last 1/2 of the tutoring time for a "conference" which would give us time to talk about law school at a planned event.
This program meets next Saturday, 2/10 and then is on break until 3/3. I have been approved to go and am planning on going if I can find atleast 1 other person to go. In order to be approved each interested person mus fill out their online application (takes less than 5 mins), and allow the coordinator, Jenny Foster, to give you a 20 min phone interview. This is all for the children's saftey, they will complete a Cori Check that turns over quickly. She gets right back to you, so if everyone interested in comming could try to fill out the application today and tommarow, we will all be able to volunteer next week. Community Service Opportunity !!!
Hey APALSA,
Everyone's favorite time of the year is rolling around again, and I'm not referring to the Mentor/Mentee event--The Tax season is coming upon us! In addition to the wonderful opportunity for Uncle Sam to take his cut of your summer job money, it's a great time to get involved. Many APALSA members participated last year in helping folks fill out their Tax Return forms through CTA, the Community Tax Aid of Boston.
For those that are looking to chip in a couple hours each week for a few months (February to April), this is a very rewarding opportunity. People get really excited when you show them how much money you've helped them to get back in their tax return check! Doing this requires no extraordinary math skills or tax talent. Just the brain on your head that got you into BC Law. Plus, there is a licensed CPA on hand so you've always got someone competent looking over your shoulder.

BLG NETWORKING EVENT
REMINDER: RSVP Deadline is Monday, January 22! More Attorneys have signed up for this event than students!
As you may remember, this is the first event in a series of events that the BLG hosts for 1L Students of Color. In the past, more than 100 law students from Boston-area law schools have attended to mingle with 40 - 50 attorneys from the BLG member organizations. This is a great event for law students to begin building their professional network. They will also receive important information about how to participate in all future BLG events.

In September 2005, JTBF launched the JTBF Judicial Externship/Clerkship Program in conjunction with Judge Smith-Ribner of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania. The purpose of the Program is to foster racial diversity among law clerks within the federal and state judiciary. In addition to the wonderful opportunity for Uncle Sam to take his cut of your summer job money, it's a great time to get involved. Many APALSA members participated last year in helping folks fill out their Tax Return forms through CTA, the Community Tax Aid of Boston.
For those that are looking to chip in a couple hours each week for a few months (February to April), this is a very rewarding opportunity. People get really excited when you show them how much money you've helped them to get back in their tax return check! Doing this requires no extraordinary math skills or tax talent. Just the brain on your head that got you into BC Law. Plus, there is a licensed CPA on hand so you've always got someone competent looking over your shoulder.

International Legal Studies Colloquium

It is my pleasure to announce that the next meeting of the International Legal Studies Colloquium will feature BC Law's own Professors Hugh Ault, Frank Garcia and David Wirth in a panel discussion entitled "International Dispute Resolution: Current Patterns, New Models." The panel will focus on recent developments in two institutional contexts: the World Trade Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. It is sponsored by the LL.M. Office and the International Law Program. The colloquium will be held on Tuesday, January 23 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Professor Ault will be participating from Paris, but the rest of us will be meeting in Stuart 414. Fordham Summer Program/Internships in Korea
Fordham University School of Law and Sungkyunkwan University College of Law are pleased to co-sponsor the second annual Summer Law Institute, a three week academic program in international and comparative law in Seoul, Korea from June 12-29, 2007. The first Institute, in 2006, was attended by 87 law students and practitioners, with students coming from 35 U.S. and Canadian law schools including UC-Berkeley, Duke, Emory, Fordham, Hastings, North Carolina, NYU, and UCLA. Students may enroll in three credit hours by taking one of the following courses: International Human Rights Law, International Commercial Arbitration, International Business Transactions, and Corporate Governance in a Global Era. These courses will be taught in English by distinguished tenured or tenure-track faculty from Fordham, Columbia, and the University of Washington Law Schools. The program will also offer optional Korean language lessons for those students interested in learning some basic Korean. Students will be able to enroll in three credit hours during the program, and the courses are approved by the ABA for credit toward the J.D. degree.Following the program, students who would like to stay on for internships at Korea's largest multi-national companies, the Korean supreme and constitutional courts, human rights organizations, the Foreign Ministry, as well as some summer associate positions at leading Korean law firms, will have the opportunity to do so under the auspices of the Institute's non-credit internship program. Program students will also tour the Korean National Court, the Supreme Court, the National Prosecutor's Office and the Foreign Ministry, and attend an extensive selection of extra-curricular tours and social events that enable students to experience Korean cultural life. BLG EVENT!!
Dear Law School Students,
As we prepare to enter 2007, please save the date for an upcoming BLG event to kick-off the new year. On January 24, we will have a program called "Charting Your Legal Future," in Boston at Brown Rudnick Berlack Israels, LLP from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. This forum is for 1L students of color to meet practicing attorneys from Boston for an open discussion on important issues such as: Job Searching, Conceptualizing Your Specialty, The Summer Associate Experience, Mentoring as A Survival Skill, Life as A Lawyer and Living & Practicing Law in Boston.
In the past, more than 100 law students from Boston-area law schools have attended to mingle with 40 - 50 attorneys from the BLG member organizations. This is a great event for 1L students to begin building their professional network. They will also receive important information about how to participate in all future BLG events.

Cambodian Health Crisis Forum
On Saturday, January 13th, Khmer Health Advocates and Brown Medical School will host a public awareness seminar on the current Cambodian Health crisis. The forum will be held at Brown University and will include an overview of the Cambodian refugee community. Discussion topics include:
Health issues affecting Cambodian-Americans
Medical approaches to treating victims of trauma and torture
Cambodian concepts of health
Type 2 diabetes in Cambodian refugees
Integration of Eastern and Western health approaches.
A strategic meeting with Cambodian leaders will be held directly after the public awareness forum.

DEFENDING ASIAN AMERICAN VOTING RIGHTS
for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students
In prior elections, Asian Americans faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote; for example, ballots have been mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans and vice versa, lack of interpreters, denial of language assistance, rude and hostile poll workers. Then, when the news media reported on election returns and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were overlooked. AALDEF's Voting Rights Program aims to enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard against anti-Asian voter discrimination.
Voting Rights Interns work on the following:
*Reviewing election monitoring reports to advocate for election reforms and compliance with the Voting Rights Act and federal Constitution. The Voting Rights Act mandates Chinese and Korean language voting assistance and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination. This includes legal research and writing, fact pattern development, and working with clients and witnesses for possible litigation.
*Documenting the use of bilingual ballots and reporting on Asian American voting patterns from AALDEF's multilingual multi-state voter survey.
*Assess local elections compliance with settlements reached in voting rights lawsuits in Massachusetts and other states.
*Registering new voters after citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.
*Conducting research and advocacy on local, state and federal election reform proposals.
Description of Fall Internships:
Supervision: Interns are supervised by attorneys through regular meetings and trainings.
Compensation: These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit can be arranged.
Hours: Interns work anywhere between 12 to 25 hours per week in the office.
Duration: Winter internships are during intersession and Spring internships usually follows the spring semester, commencing with the start of classes (end of January) to the first or second week of May.

SPRING LEGAL INTERNSHIPS 2007
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, legal advocacy, and community education. Legal internships are available in the following program areas:
Anti-Trafficking Project, legal research on the Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (TVPA), as well as outreach, community education, and advocacy on the rights of women and youth trafficking survivors .
Community Health Care Initiative, legal research, as well as community education and outreach in the areas of immigration, government benefits, language rights, and health care access;
Economic Justice for Workers, litigation on behalf of garment, restaurant, and other low wage workers;
Educational Equity and Youth Rights, legal services, policy work, community education, research and litigation concerning educational equity, juvenile justice, affirmative action and post 9-11 hate violence and racial targeting;
Immigrant Access to Justice, litigation, legal services, and organizing/outreach with communities impacted by 9-11, including special interest detainees, special registration, voluntary interviews by the government, the 9-11 absconder initiative, and local and state enforcement of immigration laws;
New Jersey Asian American Legal Project, community outreach, education, and legal services to Asian Americans in New Jersey, as well as community organizing and litigation on employment-related claims for Asian immigrant workers in New Jersey.
Korean Community Law Project, direct legal services and litigation on employment-related claims for Korean immigrant workers, and community education /advocacy in collaboration with YKASEC - Empowering the Korean American Community;
South Asian Workers Project, direct legal services on employment-related claims to South Asian immigrant workers, as well as community education and advocacy; and
Voting Rights, legal research and fact development under the Voting Rights Act and Equal Protection challenging anti-Asian voter discrimination, advocacy on bilingual ballots, and state and local election reform; produce reports and organize public forums.
Description of Internships.
Interns are supervised by attorneys in specific program areas. Legal interns will work on litigation, particularly legal research and writing, legal and policy advocacy, client intakes, and some community outreach and education. Each program area differs in emphasis.
These internships are not paid positions, but academic credit can be arranged. Interns work anywhere between 8 to 25 hours per week. The internship usually commences with the start of classes or late January/early February through late April/early May.
