LALSA DINNER & DOCUMENTARY NIGHT -- Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Please join us this Wednesday, March 5, at 5:45pm in EW 120 for dinner and a special screening of Immigrant Reflections (A documentary chronicling three immigrant BC campus service workers and their experiences living in the U.S.)

The documentary was presented at the Boston Latino International Film Festival last fall. Susan Legere, a doctoral student in sociology at BC and the filmmaker, will present the film. Vicky Miranda, one of those chronicled and one of our own Stuart Dining Hall employees, will also be present.

We hope that you can join us and enjoy free Brazilian food from Cafe Bello, a great film, and enlightening discussion! All are welcome!

BOSTON LAWYERS GROUP MOCK INTERVIEW PROGRAM (Application Deadline: Friday, March 7, 2008)

The Boston Lawyers Group would like to invite you to participate in its annual Mock Interview Program (see below for details). Volunteer attorneys and legal recruiters from top law firms will help you prepare for legal interviews, by offering tips on how to impress employers, avoid common pitfalls and successfully secure employment.

You will have 2 twenty-minute interviews, followed by feedback regarding your resume, presentation, and interview skills. These are low-pressure practice interviews. They are not recruitment interviews.

APALSA SEEKING MEMBERS FOR BANQUET AND ADMISSIONS COMMITTEES!

APALSA wants you! Each year, we assemble committees to help plan our end-of-the-year banquet, and to provide information to admitted APA-identified students to help them decide whether (or not) to attend BC Law.

The admissions committee works with the school's admissions office to get the names of admitted students who self-identify as being APA, and contacts those students to give them information on Boston College Law School. This opportunity allows APALSA to establish early contact with potential 1Ls, and gives incoming students an important resource in deciding which school they will ultimately attend.

The end-of-the-year banquet is one of the most important events of the year, and last year's event was a success, with dozens of students, several professors, and a special guest speaker in attendance. Help us make this year's event another one to remember!

Lawrence Ma, a BC Law alum from the Class of 2001, who is based in San Francisco, has sent us copies of the 2008 Directory of Bay Area Law Firms and the 2007-2008 BASF (Bar Association of San Francisco) Directory. These could be valuable resources for those interested in seeking employment in the Bay Area for the summer.

LEGAL ADVOCACY AND RESOURCE CENTER (LARC) -- EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC) OUTREACH PROJECT

The Legal Advocacy and Resource Center (LARC), a free legal hotline located in Boston, is looking for volunteers for their Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Outreach Project.

The EITC is a special tax benefit that helps to reduce or eliminate the taxes for low income workers. It can be worth over 4,500 dollars based on income and number of dependent children. LARC talks with over 15,000 clients on their hotline each year. Starting in January, they call back all the clients that may be eligible to tell them about the EITC and direct them towards tax preparation centers that can help them file. EITC can be a very effective anti-poverty tool and LARC is working to make it more accessible to the people who can benefit from it the most. LARC is hoping to get volunteers to come in and call their clients back regarding the EITC on Tuesday evenings, when they are open until 8pm. LARC will also be providing pizza to all their volunteers each week.

This could be a great opportunity for students to get experience working with clients in a legal services setting. Any questions can be directed to Heather Van Orman at hvanorman[at]gbls.org.

FORDHAM-SKKU SUMMER LAW INSTITUTE PROGRAM

Fordham University School of Law and Sungkyunkwan University College of Law are pleased to co-sponsor the third annual Summer Law Institute, a three week academic program in international and comparative law in Seoul, Korea from June 10-27, 2008. The 2007 Summer Institute was attended by 97 law students and practitioners, with students coming from 35 U.S. and Canadian law schools including Boston College, Cornell, Fordham, Hastings, USC, University of Texas, and Villanova. Five countries were represented in the student body, including two students from Beijing University in China.

Students may enroll in three credit hours by taking one of the following courses: International Human Rights Law, International Commercial Arbitration, and International Business Transactions. These courses will be taught in English by distinguished tenured or tenure-track faculty from Fordham and the University of Washington Law Schools. The program will also offer optional Korean language lessons for those students interested in learning some basic Korean. Students will be able to enroll in three credit hours during the program, and the courses are approved by the ABA for credit toward the J.D. degree.

Following the program, students who would like to stay on for internships at Korea's largest multi-national companies, the Korean supreme and constitutional courts, human rights organizations, as well as some summer associate positions at leading Korean law firms, will have the opportunity to do so under the auspices of the Institute's non-credit internship program.

Program students will also tour the Korean National Court, the Supreme Court, the National Prosecutor's Office and the Foreign Ministry, and attend an extensive selection of extra-curricular tours and social events that enable students to experience Korean cultural life.
