APALSA COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

Below are two upcoming volunteer opportunities. We know everyone is busy this time of year, but these are low-commitment ways to contribute back to the community. Please sign up if you can!

Please e-mail Jane Qin by Oct. 15th to sign up (or if you are unsure whether you are interested, so that she can talk you into it).

Help with Boston City Elections! Bilingual Poll Workers Needed – November 6th

Through the hard work of Chinatown residents, there are now bilingual ballots and each polling site with more than 35 Chinese and/or Vietnamese surnames is required to have a bilingual helper to assure independent votes. We are looking for bilingual poll workers for the upcoming City Council elections on Nov. 6th. There is a training session, and each poll worker will be compensated for their time.

The application is attached (there's a training and each poll worker will be compensated for their time).

ATASK (Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence) Annual Silk Road Gala – Volunteers Needed – November 3rd

The Silk Road Gala is the annual fundraising benefit for the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence. It began in 1992 when the Task Force needed to raise funds to support its Asian women's shelter, the first and only one in New England. Donations raised through the gala support the programs of the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence, a private, non-profit organization, which provides emergency shelter, a multilingual hotline, stabilization services, support, and advocacy to over 200 battered Asian families every year. Staff and community members work together using outreach and education to create an environment of intolerance towards domestic violence in Asian communities.

The Silk Road is a volunteer-run event. Volunteers work together to plan the event, request sponsorship, sell individual tickets, create an Asian food menu, book entertainment, create decorations, sell greetings for the program book, solicit silent auction items, promote media coverage, greet guests, and staff the event to ensure smooth gala operations.
