APALSA Film Screening: Who Killed Vincent Chin?

Come join APALSA for dinner and the screening of this Academy Award-nominated documentary. Dinner will be available starting at 4:45 PM. The film will start promptly at 5 PM.

Film Synopsis:
In June of 1982, Vincent Chin was beaten to death with a baseball bat outside a Detroit strip club by Chrysler plant superintendent Ronald Ebens and Ebens’s stepson, Michael Nitz. Motivated by their belief that the decline of American automobile sales was the fault of the Japanese, the two men attacked their Asian victim, who happened to be Chinese. Despite the fact that Chin was held by Nitz and beaten repeatedly in the head by Ebens until his skull was visibly fractured, the two men received only three years of probation and a fine of only $3,000.

Christine Choy and Renee Tajima-Peña’s 1987 Academy Award–nominated documentary explores the events leading up to the murder and following the trial’s surprising verdict. More than a simple regurgitation of the case, it sets out with the question posed by the film’s title to show the greater sociological setting of the incident. By studying the conditions of the people working in the plants and the effects of the Japanese automobile industry on Detroit, the documentary attempts to explain why an incident like this could have come to pass. Perhaps the boldest touch of the film’s narrative is that, despite the unnerving emotional detachment of Ebens when interviewed, the filmmakers draw connections between Vincent and Ronald’s pasts. Both men moved to Detroit in hopes of finding better jobs, managed to “fit in,” and yet collided in tragedy.

For more details, please read the attached document. Any students interested in working on international business deals, international consulting, or simply taking a break from law school classes (by taking a business school class) are encouraged to apply!

Have you ever dreamed of climbing the Great Wall of China? How about working overseas?

We are in the process of planning the 2009 International Consulting Project, a 3-credit course that involves consulting work during the fall semester on campus, with a trip to Beijing in January 2010 to deliver the team's recommendation personally to the client, at their offices. This is the 7th year in a row that this program has been offered.

Our Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity (CRED) and our GLBT Initiative members are hosting an event in our Boston office on April 7th and we are hoping you will assist us in distributing this information to your Class of 2011 APALSA student members. The purpose of this event is to introduce Goodwin Procter to your first-year students, and give them the opportunity to mingle with our lawyers and learn about our various practice area groups. Our hope is that this will help them better understand the opportunities at our Firm as they go into the busy (and often-confusing) process of signing up for fall on-campus interviews.
The event will be an informal reception intended to briefly introduce the students to some interesting matters that we are handling, and also have them meet some of our lawyers in a relaxed setting.

11. Northwest Minority Job Fair

On behalf of the Northwest Minority Job Fair board and Seattle Area Legal Recruiting Administrators, I am pleased to invite diverse students from your school to participate in the 23rd annual Northwest Minority Job Fair. 12. APAICS 2009-2010 Fellowship Programs

Washington, D.C.—The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS)
announced that the application for the 2009-2010 cycle is available on their Website:
www@apaics.org. This will also include the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Fellow,
which is for a post graduate and requires that the person has included in their class studies any
housing policies, urban planning, mortgages, etc. The deadline for all fellowships is May 31,
2009.

The APAICS Fellows are the Anheuser-Busch/Congressman Frank Horton Fellow, the Sodexo
Fellow, the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc./Governor George R. Ariyoshi Fellow, and the National
Association of Realtors Fellow.

The nine-month program provides an opportunity for several fellows to be placed in either the
Executive Branch, Legislative Branch, federal agencies, or a non-profit organization in the
Washington area. All the fellows are assigned specific projects by their placement offices. The
NAR Fellow will especially be involved in the various phases of the housing issues. NAR
advisors and Realtor members will continue to work closely with the fellow and may join with
the other NAR Fellows in developing a public policy brief.

The NAR Fellow will be one of three young professionals who will gain experience in legislative
advocacy and national housing policy. He or she will work closely with NAR and the placement
office. NAR is funding a fellow in each of the Tri-Caucus organizations, including APAICS.
The other two members are the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) and the
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI).

APAICS Chair David L. Kim indicated that there is also a State Farm Congressional Fellowship.
This stipend provides an elected official to shadow a member of Congress for one or two weeks
depending on the availability of the member. Kim stated, “This is a hands-on experience to learn
from a member of Congress the legislative process on how our laws are made in this country.”

4. SAVE THE DATE: APALSA Film Screening: Who Killed Vincent Chin?

Due to a conflict with the BLG Mentoring Program, APALSA will be rescheduling the screening of Who Killed Vincent Chin? Be on the lookout for more information in the coming week.

This 90 minute documentary recounts the murder of Vincent Chin, a Chinese automotive engineer mistaken as Japanese, who was slain by an assembly line worker during the height of anti-Japanese sentiment due to the rise of the foreign auto industry in the early 1980s. It tells the subsequent story of the miscarriage of justice that occurred during the trial. The murder of Vincent Chin is often regarded as the beginning of a true national Asian-American civil rights movement. This documentary was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989.

Dinner will be served, and after the film, we will have a brief discussion about the issues raised in the movie and what Vincent Chin's murder means to us now, decades later.

ASIAN INTERNATIONAL CONSULTING PROJECT

Have you ever dreamed of climbing the Great Wall of China? How about consulting to a Chinese firm in Beijing?

We are in the process of planning the 2009 International Consulting Project, a 3-credit course that involves consulting work during the fall semester on campus, with a trip to Beijing in January/2010 to deliver the team's recommendation personally to the client, at their offices. This is the 7th year in a row that this program has been offered.

We are in the process of planning the 2009 International Consulting Project to Europe for the 3rd year in a row. This is a 3-credit course that involves consulting work during the fall semester on campus, with a trip to Europe destination: TBD) in January/2010 to deliver the team's recommendation personally to the client, at their offices. We are looking for 6 outstanding students to be part of this class working on a single team.

A faculty member who has extensive European experience, and, in particular, in the public sector will be running this project. This 90 minute documentary recounts the murder of Vincent Chin, a Chinese automotive engineer mistaken as Japanese, who was slain by an assembly line worker during the height of anti-Japanese sentiment due to the rise of the foreign auto industry in the early 1980s. It tells the subsequent story of the miscarriage of justice that occurred during the trial. The murder of Vincent Chin is often regarded as the beginning of a true national Asian-American civil rights movement. This documentary was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989.

Dinner will be served, and after the film, we will have a brief discussion about the issues raised in the movie and what Vincent Chin's murder means to us now, decades later.

12. Fordham--SKKU Summer Institute in International Law in Seoul

Deadline for Summer Program: March 31

Fordham University School of Law and Sungkyunkwan University College of Law are pleased to co-sponsor the third annual Summer Law Institute, a three week academic program in international and comparative law in Seoul, Korea from June 10-27, 2008. 74 U.S. and Canadian students from 33 law schools attended the 2008 program. In its first three years, the Institute enrolled nearly 300 students from 5 countries and 60 law schools, including students from the law schools at American University, Boston College, Boston University, Chicago-Kent, Cornell, Duke, George Washington, Hastings, Illinois, Loyola-LA, McGill, NYU, Texas, Tulane, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and University of San Diego.

Students may enroll in three credit hours by taking one of the following courses: International Commercial Arbitration, and International Business Transactions, and Public International Law. These courses will be taught in English by distinguished tenured faculty from Fordham and the University of Virginia Law Schools. The program will also offer optional Korean language lessons for those students interested in learning some basic Korean. Students will be able to enroll in three credit hours during the program, and the courses are approved by the ABA for credit toward the J.D. degree.

After the conclusion of the Summer Institute's academic program, the Institute will place U.S. and Canadian participants who would like to stay in Korea in 5-week internships at the Korean supreme and constitutional courts, Korean government ministries, the Korean National Assembly, multi-national corporations, human rights organizations, and law firms. Students may choose to
receive three ungraded academic credits for internships. Students opting for academic credits will have priority in internship placements and program housing over non-credit internship applicants.

Program students will also tour the Korean National Court, the Supreme Court, the National Prosecutor's Office and the Foreign Ministry, and attend an extensive selection of extra-curricular tours and social events that enable students to experience Korean cultural life.

We are in the process of planning the 2009 International Consulting Project to Europe for the 3rd year in a row. This is a 3-credit course that involves consulting work during the fall semester on campus, with a trip to Europe destination: TBD) in January/2010 to deliver the team's recommendation personally to the client, at their offices. We are looking for 6 outstanding students to be part of this class working on a single team.

A faculty member who has extensive European experience, and, in particular, in the public sector will be running this project. 7. Fordham--SKKU Summer Institute in International Law in Seoul

Deadline for Summer Program: March 31

Fordham University School of Law and Sungkyunkwan University College of Law are pleased to co-sponsor the third annual Summer Law Institute, a three week academic program in international and comparative law in Seoul, Korea from June 10-27, 2008. 74 U.S. and Canadian students from 33 law schools attended the 2008 program. In its first three years, the Institute enrolled nearly 300 students from 5 countries and 60 law schools, including students from the law schools at American University, Boston College, Boston University, Chicago-Kent, Cornell, Duke, George Washington, Hastings, Illinois, Loyola-LA, McGill, NYU, Texas, Tulane, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, USC, and University of San Diego.

Students may enroll in three credit hours by taking one of the following courses: International Commercial Arbitration, and International Business Transactions, and Public International Law. These courses will be taught in English by distinguished tenured faculty from Fordham and the University of Virginia Law Schools. The program will also offer optional Korean language lessons for those students interested in learning some basic Korean. Students will be able to enroll in three credit hours during the program, and the courses are approved by the ABA for credit toward the J.D. degree.

After the conclusion of the Summer Institute's academic program, the Institute will place U.S. and Canadian participants who would like to stay in Korea in 5-week internships at the Korean supreme and constitutional courts, Korean government ministries, the Korean National Assembly, multi-national corporations, human rights organizations, and law firms. Students may choose to
receive three ungraded academic credits for internships. Students opting for academic credits will have priority in internship placements and program housing over non-credit internship applicants.

Program students will also tour the Korean National Court, the Supreme Court, the National Prosecutor's Office and the Foreign Ministry, and attend an extensive selection of extra-curricular tours and social events that enable students to experience Korean cultural life.

This email contains information on the International Consulting Project. During Fall semester 2009, we'll be offering two courses, both involving classroom work and travel - to either Europe or to Asia. The Information Session will be held on Monday, March 23rd, in Fulton 245. The European presentation will be from 6:00 - 6:20 pm, and the Asia presentation is from 6:20 - 6:50 pm. Detailed information on both courses is below.
